Drill length guide

When 20 mm is the right drill length.

The 20 mm kit exists for cases where 15 mm of working depth does not reach the planned apex. There are three clinical scenarios where the extra length matters, and recognizing them before the procedure starts is what makes the kit choice predictable.

1. Fully guided surgery with a sleeve stack

A typical surgical guide adds 5 to 7 mm above the crestal bone once you account for the guide thickness and the drill shoulder. A 15 mm working length minus a 6 mm guide stack leaves only 9 mm of in-bone reach, which is short of most standard implant lengths. The 20 mm kit restores the full in-bone reach for guided cases regardless of guide thickness.

2. Long implants and full-arch reconstructions

Implants 13 mm and longer (common in posterior mandibular sites, All-on-X protocols, and tilted-implant rehabilitation) require enough drill length to safely reach the planned apex with clearance for the shoulder and stopper. The 20 mm kit is the default for any practice that places long implants regularly.

3. Thick keratinized tissue and deep alveolar anatomy

In sites with thick keratinized gingiva or a deep buccal shelf, the soft-tissue offset alone can consume 3 to 4 mm of drill length before the cortical pass even begins. The 20 mm length keeps the cutting flutes engaged through the full osteotomy rather than the shoulder running against the shank.
